Ethiopia sports-betting status in 2026

On 15 December 2025, the Ethiopian Lottery Service revoked the operating licences of all sports-betting organisations. The instruction covered active and previously suspended operators and required betting activity to stop across physical and digital channels.

In July 2026, ELS reiterated that no sports-betting organisation currently operates with a legal Ethiopian licence. It warned citizens not to deposit through websites, applications, social pages, agents or other money-collection channels claiming otherwise.

On 6 August 2026, the federal Government Communication Service reported enforcement against 38 betting enterprises described as illegal institutions. Their owners were taken into custody and associated bank accounts were frozen. No replacement licensing process or authorised-operator list was announced.

Where to check a new status claim

Check the Ethiopian Lottery Service website and its official public channel for the original notice, date, named legal entity and permitted activity. A general lottery announcement is not a sportsbook authorisation. This page does not confirm a newly authorised operator; an accessible commercial link is not a substitute for such a notice.
